Description

Primary Goal: To provide a non-threatening pathway for certified students to come back to Northern Breezes Sailing, an ASA sailing school, to refresh skill sets or to completely re-engage in sailing through focused instruction in requested skill areas.

ASA 111 Overview:
This is difficult to do because we refuse to violate a basic principal learned over twenty years of conducting these types of offshore classes. That is to never take students out for their initial offshore sail at night. This does not mean we don't like to sail at night. Rather, it is because students have a high propensity for sea sickness if they haven't acclimated to the boat in daylight prior to night sailing. Keeping this basic rule in tact, the shortest time frame for the ASA 111 tailored review for the Offshore Advanced Coastal Cruising is two days with Northern Breezes Sailing. We believe this approach will allow for a high quality review which includes night sailing, night approach, MOB, etc. without repeating the entire course. This on-the-water skills review clinic, ASA 111, is targeted to meet the needs of Northern Breezes graduates and other ASA certified sailors who either need a “refresher,” at the Offshore Advanced Coastal Cruising, ASA 106, level or have a desire to hone their skills and build confidence at this level through focused instruction in a few areas (e.g., managing a boat at night, sail trim, watch standing, etc.).

Since it is a clinic, not a (graded) course, all participating students receive credit for attending. Students receive a suggested curriculum sheet prior to class and receive a Recommendations Sheet from their instructor at the end of the course with instructor comments on their performance and, for example, notes on what they might consider as next steps. Students may take this course multiple times at several different levels. Since Northern Breezes has offered refresher courses for almost twenty years all of these will be rolled under the ASA 111 umbrella so that students will receive national and international recognition for their "refresher" accomplishments.

Northern Breezes will record a student’s ASA 111 clinic completion with American Sailing Association, (ASA). ASA will then mail students an ASA 111 logbook sticker.

The clinic has no formal classroom component since the emphasis is on practical, on-the-water sailing skills. No exams or textbooks are required as part of the clinic. Northern Breezes will provide current textbooks to students if they desire them for an additional charge.

Clinic Outline Adapted from "Student Suggestions"

At The Dock
- Safety & planning
- Should I be reefing at the dock?
- Boat parts & equipment

Underway
- Getting underway
- Sailing
- Points of Sail
- Sail Trim
- MOB
- Rules of the Road
- Maneuvering under power
- Docking
This outline is intentionally very general. Each clinic’s specific topics will be tailored to take into account:

1) the last ASA course level completed by students
2) Students’ recent sailing experience or lack thereof, and
3) Students’ requested topics for review or practice.

At Northern Breezes we often restate the obvious that this is your clinic, your experience. The more effort you put in upfront with "refresher topics" for example. The more expectations we will be able to meet!

Clinics are cancelled and rescheduled due to weather: no wind, too much wind, potential lightening or pouring rain. Sailing with Northern Breezes is not an endurance test. It is fun, safe learning of  lifelong skill sets.
