Description

This is a 3-session course designed to give students an introduction to one-design racing. Students will gain the confidence to safely skipper or crew a boat in a club race. Each boat will be limited to 2 students and will have a Northern Breezes instructor onboard.

The first session will begin with an onshore discussion of right-of-way rules, basic racing tactics, sail trim, and upwind and downwind tactics. We will then go out on the water for some practice starts, rotating students between crew and helmsman/woman.

The second session will be on the water with a few practice starts and then practice races. The focus will be on boathandling, sail trim, spinnaker handling/trim, boat speed, and upwind vs. downwind sailing.

For the final session we will join the Medicine Lake Sailing Club for an actual sailboat race. Students will use skills gained in the first two sessions in order to confidently and safely compete in a race with multiple boats. After Wednesday night races, racers typically go out for pizza, students are welcome to join.

The course is ideal for graduates of our American Sailing Association Basic Keelboat Certification (ASA 101) or for anyone with other previous sailing experience. This is a great way to get back out on the water with an instructor and to experience the excitement of racing!
