Description

Basic Keelboat (ASA 101) is taught by American Sailing certified instructors at Pikes Bay Marina on Lake Superior aboard a 28' keelboat with an inboard diesel, wheel steering and a brand new Chart Plotter.

Northern Breezes Sailing School offers you a terrific Learn-to-Sail program with the combination of the finest school and a superb O'Day 28 cabin sailboat. Located on scenic Lake Superior next to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Bayfield, WI is 3.5 hours from the Twin Cities and 1.5 hours east and north of Duluth, MN. This is why we developed the immersion, 2-day live-aboard course for Bayfield, WI. This format is priced differently than our other Basic Keelboat courses because the other locations are 3-4 hours per day over several days versus an immersion, live-aboard course.

This is a two-session, 10-hour course taught by Northern Breezes Sailing School instructors certified by American Sailing (ASA). Classes are limited to two to three students unless in the Family & Friends format. This small seminar environment provides a great instructor to student ratio for effective skipper and crew training. Each session starts with a briefing on the day’s lesson, getting underway, sailing exercises and ends with docking and securing the boat.

Included in tuition, students receive the Sailing Made Easy textbook and the American Sailing Log Book.

Upon successful completion of both the on-the-water and written exam, the Basic Keelboat graduate receives an American Sailing Certificate, and a seal for their Log Book.

More Details

The Bayfield Basic Keelboat Course is an immersion course. Most customers come to Pikes Bay Marina the night before the scheduled course and stay aboard the boat. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow! The next morning we review your pre-test with you and usually accept it as your written exam. Everything after is experiential! We will do lots of sailing, docking and anchoring exercises the first day which is sometimes modified a bit by weather. Northern Breezes provisions for lunch so we don't waste valuable daytime hours eating out. You are welcome to bring breakfast, dinner or make it more of a vacation by eating in the fine, local restaurants. The second day is a review of the first day including what "you" may want to practice more. Class is normally over noon to 2:00 PM. There is a brief boat cleanup period after class.

Added Benefit

Graduates can bareboat charter Adagio, your class boat, with some location restrictions from our sister company, Apostle Islands Charters. www.apostleislandscharters.com. Normally, you need to complete two more courses: Coastal Cruising (ASA 103) and Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104) in order to Bareboat Charter!
