Description
Life transitions affect our sailing instructor pool just as they affect life choices in general. Northern Breezes needs some new sailing instructors at nearly every level from beginning to advanced. This past season alone we have had two senior instructors needing knees, ankles or other operations with extended recovery and or physical therapy times. We have had two other senior instructors with serious family support issues which require putting sailing instruction on temporary hold. And, the story goes on with several younger instructors traveling for graduate degrees out of the area, etc.
Here are a couple of benefits of becoming an Instructor
Even at the introductory levels, students ask a lot of questions. Instructors need to be able to show students both visually and through demonstration, proper techniques. This extends down even to the levels of body positioning and how to best use upper-body strength to be successful.
The net effect of answering questions, show and tell, and assisting in a myriad of ways, is that you become a much better sailor yourself. You gain confidence while instilling confidence. This is not a zero sum game. You progress as your students do. Sailing friends are often friends for life!
How we work with Instructors
We ask you when you have major conflicts such as weddings, annual family events, etc. We add that information to our "assignment" spreadsheet. We add which locations you may not be able to teach at because of distance, etc. Then we send emails to our instructors telling them what classes are available. If we still need help, we may call you. All of our instructors are independent contractors which in general is very useful to you.
ASA's Standards and Northern Breezes Support
Teaching to standards with an organized curriculum makes it easier for you to teach and is well received by your students. Don't be overwhelmed with the thought of being an instructor, you will likely overcome with enthusiasm any small stumbles. Remember your students are coming to you with great enthusiasm in general. Sailing is exciting to your students. You are helping folks realize "dreams."
If you have an interest, follow through! We have needs for Basic Small Boat Instructor (ASA 210), Basic Keelboat Instructor (ASA 201), Basic Coastal Cruising Instructor (ASA 203) and Bareboat Charter Instructor (ASA 204). Be sure to send an email before registering.
