Description
Basic Keelboat (101) and Basic Coastal Cruising (103) are taught aboard our 31' cruising auxiliary sailboat as a four-day course on Monday–Thursday, or as a six-day course on weekends. Course fee includes course materials—ASA textbooks, Sailing Made Easy and Coastal Cruising Made Easy, Federal Regulations booklet, Log Book, class notes and ASA Certifications.
The Lake Pepin combined Basic Keelboat and Basic Coastal Cruising course can be scheduled as a regular Lake Pepin course or as a Family and Friends course.
The following two courses, Basic Keelboat - ASA Course 101 and Basic Cruising - ASA Course 103, are included in the combined course program. Read the individual course descriptions for more detail. Flexibility in response to weather often requires rearrangement of scheduling of specific items in the course from one day to a different day.
Basic Keelboat - ASA Course 101
This is the first part of a two-part program. Northern Breezes Sailing School offers you a terrific Learn-to-Sail program with the combination of the finest school and a superb Hunter 310 cabin sailboat located on scenic Lake Pepin in Pepin, WI. Pepin Marina is found one hour southeast of the Twin Cities on Wisconsin Hwy 35—approximately 20 minutes from Redwing or Wabasha, MN.
Basic Cruising - ASA Course 103
This is the second part of a two-part program. Students will learn the fundamentals of large boat cruising while doing it! Preparation for skippering on larger bodies of water is the focus. Qualified graduates will become basic coastal cruising certified from 25 to 35 feet. Instructor is ASA certified, U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain.

Part 2: Review, Tacking & Jibing, Sail Trim, Helming
Second Session
Part 1: Review, Controlling Angle of Heel, Heaving to, Reefing
Part 2: Review, Crew Overboard Drill, Solo Checkout, Written Pre-Test
Third Session
Part 1: Boat Systems & Battery, Electrical Panel, Engine, Prop Walk, Docking, Sailing Tacks & Jibes (Possible Testing)
Part 2: Sail Trim, Crew Overboard Procedures, Reefing, Heaving to, Anchoring (Possible Testing)
Fourth Session
Part 1: Navigation, Chart Problem, Rules of the Road, Sound Signals, Buoys, Lights, VHF, Cruising Tips, Docking, Student Directed Reviews
Part 2: Safety Systems, Heavy Weather Sailing, Student Directed Reviews.
Note: six-session courses contain the same material scheduled similarly.
Students should bring clothing for all weather conditions.
Course Fee
$1,198 singles. $2,396 for couples (any two people signing up together). Family and friends option: if three people sign up together the total is $3,594.

Basic Keelboat and Basic Coastal Cruising are also offered as a 3–5 day Family and Friends course! If you have family members or friends who do not want to earn certification through the American Sailing Association (ASA) or, who are not old enough to be certified, but would like to come along to learn while you are being certified, this is the option for you! All Family and Friends Basic Keelboat and Basic Coastal Cruising courses are customized for the student and group's needs.
